Spodumene Var. Kunzite – Vandenberg Mine, San Diego County, California, USA

Kunzite of rare strength, resulting in a particularly intense pink hue. The clarity and luster of this historic crystal are particularly noteworthy.

Like most kunzite crystals, this piece has interestingly etched surfaces and a bright pink color, reflecting trichroitic characteristics—a different color when viewed along each of its three axes. This good-quality, intensely colored piece comes from the Pala Mining District, where this mineral was discovered and named in 1903 by George Frederick Kunz, a mineralogist at the Tiffany Co.
