Rutile - Grieswies, Rauriser Valley, Salzburg, Austria
Countless metallic lustrous rutile crystals up to 3 cm in length on a matrix richly covered with siderite. Such a piece is hard to find, as the rutiles can easily break while being removed fromthe cleft. The highly lustrous needles contrasts beautifully from the rusty red of the siderite.
The Rauris is known for its diverse quartz crystal finds. Almost all deposits are located in the core zone of the Hohe Tauern National Park. For some years now, collecting minerals has only been possible here with a special permit. Because of this, minerals from the Rauris are rarely offered. The rutile specimen comes from the collection of Josef Kolb, who has been looking for minerals there regularly since the 1970s.
