Mimetite - Guaatomo Mine, Tham Thalu, Bannang Sata District, Yala Province, Thailand
Transparent intense yellow specimen of Mimetesite with perfect crystals up to 5mm in size. The hexagonal crystals have a particularly perfect, jewel-like transparency. The bright yellow color is characteristic of this globally unique mimetesite from Thailand. The piece is richly occupied and the highly lustrous crystals stand out wonderfully from the brownish matrix.
The piece fluoresces strongly under shortwave UV light.
There have been no more finds for several years, as the area is no longer considered workable due to political problems. This site is one of the very few great sites for crystallized mimetesite. Like most others (Tsumeb, Pingtouling, etc.), Hat Yai is no longer producing. Good tracks quickly became classics and this one is one of them.
The site is adjacent to the Buddhist temple of Wat Tham Thalu, about 10 km west of the town of Bannang Sata, Yala Province, southern Thailand, near the Malaysian border.
it is an abandoned open pit lead-tin mine where Marco Sacchi and Danilo Bernasconi mined mimetic specimens between 1996 and 1998. These finds were first shown in 1998 at the Bologna Exhibition in Italy. To protect the confidentiality of the discovery, it was initially claimed that they were from Hat Yai district of Songkhla province in Thailand.
