Hematite with Quartz - Florence Mine, Egremont, west Cumberland Iron Field, Cumbria, UK.
Deep black strongly lustrous hematite flakes with short prismatic double terminated quartz up to 1.5 cm in size. On the reverse side the shape of the so called Kidney Ore Hematite can be seen.
This variety of hematite was found in the Florence mine east of the western Cumbrian town of Egremont. Iron mineralization here occurs through the displacement of limestone, and the kidney-shaped ore from this mine is undoubtedly among the absolute best in the world. It is a magnificent specimen, striking for its size, color, morphology and patina. In cross-section, the hematite is graphite to steel gray with a satin sheen, while the outer surface is partially reddish with a metallic satin sheen finish.
