Hematite (glass head) – Florence Mine, Egremont, West Cumberland Iron Field, Cumbria, UK

Kidney Ore Hematite with the characteristic spherical structure.

This variety of hematite was discovered in the Florence Mine, east of the West Cumbrian town of Egremont. Iron mineralization here occurs through the replacement of limestone, and the kidney-shaped ore from this mine is undoubtedly among the absolute finest in the world. It is a magnificent specimen, striking in its size, color, morphology, and patina. In cross-section, the hematite is graphite to steel gray with reddish deposits, while the outer surface is highly lustrous.
