Fluorite - Hilton Mine, Scoredale, Cumbria, England

Sharp-edged Fluorite Hexahedra of up to 1.7 cm on the edge on matrix. The transparent cubes show phantoms and beside colorless also yellow and thin violet zones. On some fluorites at the edge of the specimen also some green shimmers through.

From the veins in the limestone in the north-east of England in the county of Westmore, near the small town of Hilton, galena was recovered as early as 1824. Since 1963 the mine is out of operation, but was left open, so that in the 60's and 70's excellent honey- to gold-yellow fluorites with an edge length of up to 2.5 cm could be found.

Good specimens from the Hilton Mine are rare, as underground collecting has been strictly prohibited since the 1970s because of the danger of collapse.
