Fluorite - Hilton Mine, Appleby-in-Westmoreland, Cumbria Co. GB

Beautiful cabinet specimen with the sought-after intense yellow color . Cube-shaped crystals with up to 1.2 cm on the edge. Partly the clear and lustrous crystals are terminated as twins.

From the veins in the limestone in the north-east of England in the county of Westmore, near the small town of Hilton, galena was already recovered in 1824. Since 1963 the mine is out of operation, but was left open, so that in the 60's and 70's excellent honey- to gold-yellow fluorites with up to 2.5 cm on the edge could be found.

Good specimens from the Hilton Mine are rare, as underground collecting has been strictly prohibited since the 1970s because of the danger of collapse.
