Malachite to Cuprite – Onganja Mine, Seis, Windhoek, Namibia
Cuprite crystals almost completely overgrown with malachite. The crystal shape of the three cuprite crystals is clearly recognizable.
These historic specimens of malachite coated cuprite from Onganja are still unique in the world and have not been found in this quality for decades (since the 1970s). This is an unusually aesthetic collector's piece with a great geometry of these remarkable crystals. The largest crystal is over 3 cm wide, the other has a diameter of 2.7 cm. All cuprites show a combination of octahedral, cubic and dodecahedral shapes! The malachite coating on these crystals shows various shades of green. These are large and unusually free-standing crystals on a small amount of matrix! This is a classic showcase specimen from this famous site from which no significant finds have come since the 1970s.
Unlike many other pieces, the malachite here was not removed with acid to expose the cuprite underneath.
Unfortunately, these pseudomorphs of malachite after cuprite are rarely offered, as most crystals are acidified in order to be able to sell the "more valuable" cuprite.
Colorful and beautifully crystallized pseudomorph from Namibia.
