Calcite – St. Andreasberg, Harz, Germany
Former K and K Mining Museum Vienna
Classic, sharp-edged calcite from St. Andreasberg. The main crystal measures 4 cm x 3 cm x 2.5 cm and has a white top surface that contrasts beautifully with the transparent base. It appears red under UV light.
The calcite comes with a beautiful handwritten label from the Montanistic Museum, Vienna.
The Mining Museum in the Court Chamber for Minting and Mining, founded in 1835 at the instigation of Prince August von Lobkowitz on the Heumarkt in Vienna (now the Austrian Mint), served as a teaching institution for graduates of mining academies. Its first director was F. Mohs, followed in 1840 by W. von Haidinger, who had the first geognostic map of the Austrian Empire printed in 1847. The staff, collections, and library were transferred to the Imperial Geological Institute (Geologisches Bundesanstalt) in 1849.
