Rock crystal – Marmotta Gap, Grimsel Pass, Bernese Oberland, Switzerland

In the 1980s, a prospector on the Grimsel Pass noticed some rock crystals lying in front of the entrance to a marmot cave. It quickly became apparent that the marmots had long ago made their home in a huge crevice. In addition to their distinctive quality and slightly smoky color, crystals from this crevice are also characterized by scratches caused by the marmots' claws. Some of these scratches are visible on this aesthetic specimen, suggesting that it is a ground specimen.

Another characteristic of specimens from the Marmottakschaff are long-prismatic and often solitary crystals. Thanks to the unique aesthetics and history of this locality, the Marmottaschaffschaff is considered one of the three most important clefts in Switzerland.

Most of the large specimens from this find are in museums and are therefore rarely, if ever, found on the open market. This piece comes from an old collection of a prospector who was fortunate enough to work in this legendary cleft himself.
